Vacuum modulator control for automatic transmission of racing cars
This patent describes a multi-speed automatic transmission for race competition vehicles having transmission gears to shift from low to high to low in response to the acceleration and deceleration of the racing vehicle wherein a vacuum modulator control is mounted between a vacuum modulator and an intake manifold. The improvement described here is in the vacuum modulator control. The control comprises a cylinder, a first port communicating with and extending aray from the cylinder and communicating with the motor vacuum and a second port communicating with and extending away from the cylinder and communicating with the vacuum modulator line. An adjustable valve means is in the cylinder for controlling the amount of vacuum going to the transmission, the adjustable valve means including externally located adjusting means for controlling the adjustment of the valve means, a vacuum gauge for visually indicating the amount of vacuum actually going to the transmission. The vacuum gauge communicates with the cylinder on the transmission side thereof as distinct from the motor side. The control means further controls the components in all the bearing units to move away from one another by a further amount sufficient to open a lateral access route for lateral introduction of a subsequent piece of the bar stock into the bearing units after advancement of the carrier through all the bearing units. The control means further controls the components in all bearing units to close the components into end-to-end mutual contact so that their respective concave walls form the fixed part of a hydrostatic bearing for the subsequent bar stock.
