Geomorphical features of northern Ohio, Sandusky, Seneca, Erie, and Huron Counties, Ohio

The geomorphology of northern Ohio immediately south of Lake Erie is dominated by Pleistocene features of the Lake Erie plain. Beach ridges of lakes Warren, Whittlesey and Maumee are well developed and describe an arcuate loop northwest, north and east of Bellevue, Ohio. Maumee III ridge is the highest, at a maximum elevation of 780 feet and formed at the beginning of the known lake stages approximately 15,000 years ago. Lake Warren beach ridge is the lowest, at an elevation of 680 feet and is well displayed in southeastern Sandusky County, along the Columbus limestone escarpment. Ground moraine covers much of the region within and beyond the lake plain and consists of clay-rich till averaging 25--50 feet (7.5--15 m) in thickness. These moraine deposits tend to subdue extensive karst features developed in the Middle Devonian Columbus Limestone. Other features associated with ground moraine are previously unreported crevasse fillings located south and east of Bellevue, Ohio. These deposits are low, linear, well-drained topographic highs extending for 1,500 to 2,000 feet (450 to 600 m) in length. They most commonly exhibit an orthogonal pattern and appear to represent glacial debris fillings of crevasses in the Wisconsinan ice sheet. This interpretation is supported by deltaic-type deposits associated with some low linear ridges, which indicates water impounded in crevasses, followed by discharge and sedimentation on the glacial plain as meltback occurred.
