Title: Shape selectivity and carbon formation in zeolites

Journal Article · · J. Catal.; (United States)

The reaction of a feed of equal weights of n-hexane (NC6), 3-methylpentane (3MP), 2,3-dimethylbutane, benzene, and toluene at 427/sup 0/C, 200 psig, and a 3:1 hydrogen-hydrocarbon ratio was studied on Y zeolites, L zeolites, mordenites, ferrierite, and a large number of zeolites of the ZSM series. The coke yields, which varied from approx. 0.02 g to approx. 2.0 g per 100 g paraffin converted, were directly related to the zeolite shape selectivity as measured by the ratio of the first-order rate constants of the disappearance of NC6 to 3MP. The effects of composition and crystal size of the zeolites were minor compared with the pore-structure effect, as was found in previous studies.
