Title: 3-D and the Penn reef play - recent experience

Abstract

Three-dimensional (3-D) seismic has driven a resurgence of the reef play in the Permian basin over the last two years. Surveys are being shot over 100 and 200 sections at a time, fueling what has become increasingly a land play. Drilling success ratios in excess of 80% are being claimed. Good wells are being made, sometimes within sight of a dry hole. This paper presents a methodology for the proper use of 3-D as an exploration tool with field examples taken from west Texas.
