Acidic deposition is one of the major environmental concerns of this decade. Yet, while wet deposition rates of acidifying species have been well documented over the last several years, there is little information on dry deposition rates. Consequently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is sponsoring the National Dry Deposition Network (NDDN). The specific objective of NDDN is to obtain routine, benchmark air quality and meteorological measurements at up to 100 sites throughout the United States to establish a climatology of dry deposition. Weekly average dry deposition rates will be estimated from measurements taken at each site. The concentration monitoring approach will be used to estimate the deposition rates. With this approach, rates are inferred using meteorological, chemical, and biological information to estimate deposition velocities on a species-specific basis and, then, by multiplying the concentrations by the deposition velocities.
