The 21 papers in this book address the problem of explosive volcanism - a subject that has been the focus of intense research in recent years. Studies of explosive volcanism are important for both basic research into geologic processes and practical application of volcanic phenomena. Models of magma evolution in shallow chamber generally require an interpretation of samples taken from explosive products. Likewise, the evaluation of the potential volcanic risk at active volcanoes and the exploration for geothermal energy in volcanic regions require an understanding of the processes of explosive volcanism and the interaction of subsurface water with magma.
