Carolina Power and Light shows the way toward automation of distribution systems
Carolina Power and Light believes that the technology and economics favor automated distribution. It is testing the concept and hardware in a large-scale demonstration it undertook jointly with Westinghouse. The demonstration equipment will serve rural, urban commercial, and urban industrial customers, with metering by two-way transponders that will transmit consumption, demand, and load survey information daily. Random reliability ranges form 98-100%, but overall system reliability is about 85%. The system will lower distribution costs and could cut 10% from distribution losses, while installation costs will be cut in half. The demonstration should identify the most economical installations. 1 table.
