This patent describes a method for maintaining an effective concentration of formaldehyde biocide in water-containing petroleum hydrocarbon production, transportation and storage systems. It comprises: utilizing as a biocide in the water-containing petroleum hydrocarbon systems a water insoluble polyoxymethylene having a high molecular weight as defined by an inherent viscosity of at least 0.1 as measured in para-chlorophenol at 60{degrees} C. and having a melting point of at least 180 {degrees} C.
