Development of a fuzzy logic expert system for pile selection. Master's thesis
This thesis documents the development of prototype expert system for pile selection for use on microcomputers. It concerns the initial selection of a pile foundation taking into account the parameters such as soil condition, pile length, loading scenario, material availability, contractor experience, and noise or vibration constraints. The prototype expert system called Pile Selection, version 1 (PS1) was developed using an expert system shell FLOPS. FLOPS is a shell based on the AI language OPS5 with many unique features. The system PS1 utilizes all of these unique features. Among the features used are approximate reasoning with fuzzy set theory, the blackboard architecture, and the emulated parallel processing of fuzzy production rules. A comprehensive review of the parameters used in selecting a pile was made, and the effects of the uncertainties associated with the vagueness of these parameters was examined in detail. Fuzzy set theory was utilized to deal with such uncertainties and provides the basis for developing a method for determining the best possible choice of piles for a given situation. Details of the development of PS1, including documenting and collating pile information for use in the expert knowledge data bases, are discussed.
