Erosion and strength degradation in soda-lime glass. [At 23 and 520/sup 0/C]
The effect of multiple particle impact at 23 and 520/sup 0/C on the erosion and strength degradation of soda-lime glass was determined. The results were analyzed in terms of the indentation fracture model. The dependence of erosion rate and strength degradation on the kinetic energy of the impacting particles was in good agreement with predictions. The decrease in erosion rate at 520 compared to 23/sup 0/C was attributed to the fact that the high temperature relieved the residual stress which determines the extent of lateral cracking. The higher strength after erosion at 520 compared to 23/sup 0/C was believed to be due to the increased plasticity of the glass causing partial relief of the residual stress at the impact site.
