Lineaments and petroleum occurrences in the north of the East European Platform
Lineaments of the East European Platform were studied via satellite-photograph interpretation. These networks of basements faults determined the principal structural features of the various horizons of the sedimentary cover and basement. Development of the faults was associated with the formation of local brachyanticlines (potential structural traps for oil and gas). The zones of long-developing consedimentational faults may contain fields of other types. The expression of the faults in the present landscape, indicating active movements during the neotectonic stage of evolution of the area, suggest that the zones of these faults are a petroleum exploration criterion, since they later controlled the redistribution of hydrocarbons and the formation of present oil and gas fields.
