Title: Relationship of microstructure in stressed coal seams to observed seismoacoustic phenomena

Conference · · Ser. Rock Soil Mech.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6740488

Seismoacoustical activity is a time-dependent phenomenon. It is markedly influenced by the microstructure that is developed within the coal strata in response to stress changes imposed by the advancing longwall face. An in situ test is described whereby time-dependent changes in this structure were measured by means of electrical resistivity. On the basis of micromorphic continuum theory and mining experience, two plausible models are suggested for the development of seismoacoustical activity in potential failure zones.
