Abstract

The report presents details of relevant aspects of the NOAA/GMCC program to measure atmospheric methane concentrations through its global, cooperative, flask sampling network. These aspects include the history of the development of the program; details of the sampling network; the flasks and the flask sampling methods; the analytical instrumentation and methods; and the calibration gases and methods. The data from individual flask samples are tabulated, as are the monthly average methane concentrations. Through adequate documentation it is more likely that the full value of these methane measurements will be realized in long-term studies of the greenhouse effect and climate change.

This document presents monthly averages and sampling statistics for atmospheric methane (CH{sub 4}) concentrations (mixing ratios) from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory (NOAA/CMDL) global cooperative flask sampling network from 1983 to 1988. The memorandum presents atmospheric methane data obtained through the shipboard sampling component of the NOAA/CMDL global cooperative flask sampling program. A significant part of the program has involved flask sampling from a commercial container ship, the Southland Star, on regular crossings of the Pacific Ocean between the U.S. west coast and New Zealand. Atmospheric CO/sub 2/ concentrations have and are being monitored in the NOAA Geophysical Monitoring for Climatic Change (GMCC) program at 20 sites during the 1970s and continuing into the 1980s. There are four continuous monitoring sites and 20 flask sampling sites. The continuous monitoring data are reported as monthly averages corrected and converted to the 1981 WMO X81 mole fraction scale. The flask samples are reported as individual samples (some sites have data for the late 1960s also) which can be summarized into monthly averages.

Measurements are presented of atmospheric methane from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory (NOAA/CMDL) cooperative air sampling network. The format is similar to that of three earlier memoranda that detail the sampling history, methodologies, procedures, instruments, and calibration history of the NOAA/CMDL methane measurement program. In this report the authors cover the period 1989-1992. The air sampling procedures and equipment, changes to the air sampling network, and analysis system are discussed. This data base presents atmospheric methane (CH4) mixing ratios from flask air samples collected over the period 1983-1993 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory's (NOAA/CMDL's) global cooperative air sampling network. Air samples were collected approximately once per week at 44 fixed sites (37 of which were still active at the end of 1993).
