This article investigates the influence of liquid-crystal materials of the cholesterol type on the lubricating properties of mineral oils. Tribotechnical tests were performed with friction pairs consisting of 40 Kh steel and Br.OTsS 5-5-5 bronze at a sliding speed v=2.66 m/sec. The additives tested were the cholesteryl esters of various acids, and the specimen wear was determined from the weight loss. It is determined that when 0.5% of the liquid crystal Kh-5 is added to the MS-20 oil, the coefficient of friction and the wear of the 40 Kh steel/Br.OTsS 5-5-5 bronze pair are reduced by a factor of 5-10, and the bulk temperature by 20-30/sup 0/K. The dependence of the coefficient of friction on load and on time in the 40 Kh/Br.OTsS 5-5-5 friction pair, in MS-20 oil with and without additives, shows that the coefficient of friction in the oils with the liquid-crystal additives becomes lower than for the oils without additives. It is concluded that the application of liquid crystals as lubricating oil additives lowers the coefficient of friction, reduces wear, lowers the temperature, and improves the antiscoring properties.
