Metallographic studies of hydrogen-embrittled AISI Type 1018 steel

Metallographic and fractographic studies of AISI Type 1018 steel disks, pressurized to rupture in either hydrogen or oxygen gas showed that the adverse effects of hydrogen were influenced by the inclusion content of the steel. The hydrogen embrittlement processes initiate at surface defects and inclusion stringers. The embrittlement sequence then involves a complicated interaction between these failure initiation sites, the availability of hydrogen and the test strain rate. Final failure can occur by either microvoid coalescence or decohesion type mechanisms.
