A model of grand unified electromagnetic, weak, and strong interactions, based on the semisimple gauge group G=SU(8)/sub L/ x SU(8)/sub R/, is considered. The leptons and fractionally charged quarks belong to the fundamental representations F/sub L/=(u-italic/sub i/d/sub i/..nu../sub e/e)/sub L/, F/sub R/=(u-italic/sub i/d/sub i/..nu../sub e/e)/sub R/ and similarly for the other generations (families) (cs..nu../sub ..mu../..mu..), (tb..nu../sub tau/tau), etc. The model leads to a low value of the unification mass Mapprox. =10/sup 6/--10/sup 8/ GeV and to an acceptable value of sin/sup 2/theta/sub W/approx. =1/3. The model contains the chiral color group SU(3)/sub L/ x SU(3)/sub R/ and allows for the existence of light axial gluons (m/sub A/< or approx. =1 GeV) in addition to the massless vector gluons. The model does not exhibit baryon number nonconservation at scales ..mu..< or approx. =M and does not have triangle anomalies if one introduces the mirror fermions F/sub L//sup( m/)approx.F/sub R/, F/sub R//sup( m/)approx.F/sub L/. The model admits hierarchic symmetry breaking and the presence of intermediate mass scales M/sub n/, with M/sub W/<<
