Research report: The organics in a Cincinnati drinking water sample were concentrated by a reverse osmosis process. The mutagenic diethyl ether soluble extract of the reverse osmosis concentrate was partitioned into acid and base/neutral fractions. These fractions were analyzed for the presence of organics using a computerized gas chromatography/mass spectrometry system equipped with glass capillary columns. About 460 compounds were identified in the drinking water extract, including 41 polynuclear aromatics, 15 PCB's, and numerous amines, amides, and other halogenated species.
