The maturation of Cedar Grove Composting
Cedar Grove Composting in Seattle, Washington, which is part of Northwest Waste Industries, a family-owned commercial waste hauling, recycling, and hazardous materials mitigation company, opened its composting facility in 1989. The company began operations there by processing yard wastes from a number of residential and commercial sites throughout the Seattle area. The plant was configured to handle a total of approximately 12,000 tons per year of materials. Almost immediately, however, the facility was faced with a massive influx of material. Indeed, during the company's first year of operation, the facility actually processed nearly four times their intended amount--approximately 45,000 tons. In order to deal with the unexpected additional volume of wastes, Cedar Grove began shredding incoming materials as soon as they entered the facility, which is a practice the company still carries over to its operations today. A general rule of thumb for facility operators has been to shred yard wastes within one hour of arriving at the facility. Since this initial year of operation, incoming tonnage amounts at the facility have increased ever since.
