As the E and P industry becomes increasingly reliant on 3-D seismic data to optimize the potential for success, some players are recognizing the limitations that patchwork 3-D data can impose on state-of-the-art project evaluation. Consequently, a new approach to 3-D data acquisition appears to be emerging. As discussed here and illustrated with example applications, the new approach noted above is to acquire much larger databases of 3-D seismic data on a regional basis, from rapidly expanding catalogs of non-proprietary data, rather than use a piecemeal selection method.
