Title: CANMET hydrocracking - a Canadian challenge

Conference · · Am. Soc. Mech. Eng., (Pap.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6641784

The CANMET hydrocracking technology has been developed to upgrade heavy oil and bitumen. Based upon the results of extensive pilot plant operations, which are now approaching 40,000 hours in duration, the engineering of a 5000 BPSD Demonstration Unit is well into the detailed design phase and construction has been initiated. The Unit, which is located in Petro-Canada's Montreal Refinery and which will be started up in 1985, maximizes utilization of Canadian sourced equipment. Apart from being the first of its kind in the field of Canadian developed process technology, it also incorporates a number of firsts in nationally developed fabrication techniques. The paper provides an overview of progress to date and highlights certain details of fabrication of the heavy-wall reactor which will be assembled in Montreal from a number of forgings using the narrow gap welding technique.
