Standard test method for amount of nonvolatile residue (NVR) in trichlorotrifluoroethane (Meseran procedure)
This method covers the quantitative determination of nonvolatile residues (NVR) in trichlorotrifluorethane (TCTFE) in the 0.1 to 100-ppM range using the technique of Evaporative Rate Analysis (ERA). Measurements are calibrated against preselected residues deposited by evaporation of standard solutions. This method is written specifically as a procedure for the determination of NVR which may exist in TCTFE when used as a cleaning solvent in precision cleaning operations of machined metal parts. USP liquid petrolatum heavy oil has been selected as the reference NVR. The general limits of accuracy are 0.1 ppM of NVR referred to a preselected reference standard. This level is achievable only when more than 1 ml of the solvent is evaporated. One-ppM levels may be detected on evaporation of 0.1 ml.
