Calculation of nuclear quadrupole splitting in high- Tc superconductors

The electric-field gradient at the Cu site in YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}} is calculated using the molecular orbitals obtained from a cluster calculation. The effects of the cluster geometry, cluster charge, and orbital occupation are studied, and the relation to nuclear-quadrupole-resonance frequencies is discussed. The same type of calculation is performed for clusters with Fe replacing Cu and compared with results of Moessbauer spectra.
