Title: Measurement of the direct photon spectrum from the UPSILON(1/ital S/)

Using the Crystal Ball detector at the /ital e//sup +//ital e/minus// storage ring DORIS II we have measured the direct photon spectrum from the UPSILON(1/ital S/). Interpreting these photons to come from the decay UPSILON/r arrow/..gamma../ital gg/ we determine the ratio /ital r/=/sup GAMMA(UPSILON/r arrow/..gamma../ital gg/)//sub GAMMA(UPSILON/r arrow//ital ggg/)/=(2.7+-0.2+-0.4)%.Thisratio /ital r/ is used to deduce the strong coupling constant in the /ital MS/ scheme at/ital Q//sup 2/=(1.5 GeV)/sup 2/ to be ..cap alpha../sub /ital s//=0.25+-0.02+-0.04. While the prediction ofthe shape of the spectrum by R. D. Field fits our data well, the prediction oflowest order QCD can clearly be ruled out.
