Title: Copper-exchanged zeolite catalysts for the cyclodimerization of butadiene--2. Catalyst structure

Journal Article · · J. Catal.; (United States)

An X-ray structure analysis of natural faujasite which was exchanged with cupric ions and dehydrated at 150/sup 0/C, showed copper ions at sites I', II, II', and III. On exposure to butadiene, copper cations migrated to site III. The unsaturated coordination and the location at the supercage pore entrances of these ions is apparently responsible for the high selectivity for the conversion of butadiene to 4-vinylcyclohexene. The zeolite framework stabilizes the copper ions but does not contribute towards the reaction otherwise.
