The use of column chromatographic procedures for the analysis of coal-derived liquids has a number of disadvantages. Most of these can be eliminated if thin-layer chromatography is used, in conjunction with a flame ionization detector. A typical application of TLC/FID techniques for the analysis of process oils from coal liquefaction and actual toluene extracts from coal liquefaction experiments is reported in this paper.
