Title: Mechanical characteristics of pipeline joints

Conference · · Am. Soc. Mech. Eng., (Pap.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6354893

Axial pull-out, bending and torque-rotation stiffness and capacity data and equations for underground torsional behavior are provided for utility pipelines using rubber gasked joints. Analytically, predicted values have been compared with the experimental data with satisfactory results. Axial pull-out for utility pipes occurs at 1.2 in (30. mm) displacement. Metal-to-metal binding takes place at very small axial push-in or after 4 degrees bending rotation of the joint. Failure mechanisms have been explained, and a modified joint which could reduce high seismic stress buildup is outlined.
