OD, as well as management training interventions are feasible in the mining industry, and both appear to have been highly effective in increasing mine safety. The management intervention also seemingly led to a substantial increase in productivity. The effect of the OD intervention on productivity could not be assessed because of the 9-week strike during 1981. Management and supervisors in both mines gave high approval to the program. No less than 98% of the Texasgulf supervisors stated that they had gained new skills and that they found that training program of value. Personnel of the Lucky Friday Mine felt that their groups had accomplished the goals the teams sought to achieve. The more costly OD approach may provide greater benefits at the upper management level. Management training may be especially cost effective at the middle and lower management levels. Inasmuch as training materials have already been developed for the mining industry, a management training intervention program could be established in most mines for $4,000 to $8,000. An OD program, requiring the services of a highly trained consultant, could probably be developed for $50,000 to $150,000. Either of these two approaches, or a combination of both are likely to serve well in most mining organizations.
