Title: Site occupancy and valence state of optically active cobalt ions in yttrium iron garnet

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. B: Condens. Matter; (United States)

An extensive study is reported of the magneto-optical properties of severalfilm and bulk samples of Co-doped yttrium iron garnet, in the wavelength range0.65--2.4 ..mu..m. The (paramagnetic) nature of all the transitionsoccurring in this range has been established, and the optical parametersquantitatively determined. The attribution of various transitions to eithertrivalent or divalent Co has been given, and the (tetrahedral-) site occupancyof the ions involved directly proved by the angular variation of inducedanisotropy technique, in several instances. Reducing annealings in hydrogenhave been found to reversibly change the valence state of large amounts (up to90%) of Co/sup 3 +/ into Co/sup 2 +/, with consequent strongvariations of the associated magneto-optical properties. On the other hand, theannealing and quenching experiments aiming to increase the tetrahedraloccupancy of Co ions proved ineffective.
