A drilling mud composition is described consisting essentially of an aqueuous medium containing 0.5 to 5 wt% dispersed clay, 0 to 10 wt% electrolyte and 0.1 to 1 wt% poly(vinylamide) of at least 10/sup 6/ average molecular weight and at least 10% hydrolyzer to vinylamine units.
