Evidence for differences in stability between nitrate ester positions on the cellulose nitrate ring

Nitrate esters on the C/sub 2/, C/sub 3/ and C/sub 6/ positions on the anhydrogluclose units of cellulose nitrate (NC) can be distinguished using high resolution Fourier transform nuclear magnetic measurements of /sup 13/C. Changes in the ester population after thermal aging of NC indicate that the three ester positions have different thermal stabilities. Some trends are discussed. 9 refs., 10 figs., 3 tabs.
