Double. beta. decay and conservation of lepton charge

The present state, tendencies, and prospects for the investigation of double ..beta.. decay are described. The basic properties and most widely accepted schemes for classifying leptons are considered briefly, and also the methods for investigating possible nonconservation of the lepton charge. The fundamentals of the theory of double ..beta.. decay are presented, and estimates of the lepton nonconservation parameter based on investigations of 2..beta.. decay are given. The experimental data are discussed extensively. The main attention is devoted to recent experiments. The possibility and prospects of further investigations of double ..beta.. decay in direct experiments are considered.
