Claus process gets extra boost

As emission limits continue to tighten, processors seek ways to improve the sulfur recovery efficiency of the well known Claus process. This article will review how the process can be improved by using a new selective oxidation catalyst in the last reactor stages. The revised process, called Superclaus, offers the following: An overall sulfur recovery of up to 99.5% without any tail gas treatment; Application in new as well as existing Claus plants; Low investment and utility costs; A continuous gas phase catalytic process without water condensation or waste streams; and The ability to reply, in what is probably the most cost effective manner, to likely future emission standards.
