Subsurface distribution of the temperatures in the Momotombo geothermal reservoir indicates that the reservoir is heated by steam emerging from a narrow source-fracture zone, located in the western part of the field. The source fracture zone trends roughly in northern direction. It extends downwards, below the level of -1700 m (m.s.l.). At shallow levels, approximately above the level of -850 m. (m.s.l.), it branches off in the eastern direction, where the hot geothermal fluids form an extensive hot plume, overlying cooler water.
