Aspects of computing in a mainframe environment are discussed with reference to the SLAC installation. Personal computers have revolutionized users' expectations, yet the centralized mainframe continues to offer indispensable advantages. Many of the components of a user-friendly environment can now be identified, but much work remains to be done in order to integrate them satisfactorily.
