Title: Heat treatment of copper-alloy cast irons with spheroidal graphite

Journal Article · · Met. Sci. Heat Treat. Met. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6154877

The features of structural formation and hardening of cast iron during tempering were investigated. The basic components of the charge were steel scraps and foundry iron and nickel. Copper, ferromolybdenum, and ferrosilicon were used for alloying and a nickel-magnesium foundry alloy and ferrocerium were used as the modifiers. The microstructure of the cast-iron specimens were analyzed using optical, electron, and emission microscopy. Mechanical tests determined the following parameters: bending strength, resilience, tensile strength, and Brinell hardness. The phase composition was determined by x-ray structural analysis and the carbide phase composition was determined by the chemical methods. It was found that tempering copper-alloy cast irons with spheroidal graphite increases bending strength, tensile strength and resilience.
