Title: Receptor modeling of atmospheric particles and acidic gases. (Volumes I and II)

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:6154533

Samples of atmospheric particles and acidic gases were simultaneously collected using a stacked-filter train consisting of a Teflon-based prefilter followed by four /sup 7/LiOH-treated Whatman-41 filters. The collected samples were analyzed by neutron-capture prompt ..gamma..-ray and instrumental neutron activation analysis for 45-50 elements. Wind trajectories were determined for the sampling periods at College Park (CP) and Wallops Island (WI). The base-treated filters quantitatively collected acidic gas-phase species of B, S, Cl, As, Se, Br, Sb, I and Hg. Boron, S, and As species were found only as acidic gases, while the others had both acidic and nonacidic contributions. Acidic gas-to-particle concentration ratios were often > 1 for B, Cl, Br, and I. Concentration ratios of several trace elements relative to Se, used to identify distant source regions, generally agreed with other reported values, but the need for updated regional signatures was apparent.
