Title: Michigan basin is a bright spot among east, southeast U. S. areas

Despite continued price uncertainty and drastic cuts in U.S. exploratory work, there are some bright spots in the Southeast, a few developments of interest in the East, and more deep gas plans for the Michigan basin. Perhaps the year's most significant wildcat in the region is Amoco Production's 1 Hayes, a rank test 5 miles west of the Mississippi River in northeastern Arkansas. Target here is 11,000 ft into the Upper Cambrian Bonneterre dolomite. Location is deep inside the Reel-foot Rift area of the upper reaches of the Mississippi embayment, at least 100 miles from any production. And, one of the nation's most successful drilling forays continues to be into the deep Ordovician pays of the Michigan basin, a program that runs side by side with the Niagaran Silurian reef trend. Alabama Ferry field is once again the busiest part of the Ark-La-Tex province.
