Stratigraphy and structural relationships within the Ocoee Supergroup along eight well-exposed sections across strike from Turtletown, Tennessee, to the Little Pigeon River suggest that: (1) the Walden Creek Group (WCG) conformably overlies both the Great Smoky Group (GSG) and the Snowbird Group (SBG). The former relationship can be verified in sections southwest of the Little Tennessee River and in the Ocoee and Hiawassee river sections studied recently by Costello and Carter and the latter north of Gatlinburg, where the Pigeon Siltstone grades to the Wilhite Formation confirming Keller's observations farther in the northeast. Between these two areas, the lower contact of the WCG is faulted. (2) The Shields Formation is incised into and interfingers with the Wilhite Formation, but the bulk of it overlies the latter and grades upwards to the Sandsuck Formation. (3) The Sandsuck Formation is conformably overlain by the Cochran Conglomerate (Chilhowee Group). Schematically, the proposed revised Ocoee Supergroup lithostratigraphy is shown. The idea that the GSG does not overlie the SBG as is generally thought, but rather intertongues with it, considerably reduces the cumulative thickness of the Ocoee Supergroup and requires totally new basin models for this sequence. Sedimentology of both the SBG and GSG has to be restudied, however, before this can be established.
