Method of and apparatus for continually monitoring the heating value of a fuel gas using a combustibility meter

Eaton Corp.'s method for determining the calorific value of a fuel gas uses a calibration point that is at or below the lower explosive limit (LEL) of the air/gas ratio rather than some point within the explosive range. Fuel gas of a known Btu content is mixed with air in a controlled ratio and fed into a commercially available combustibility meter, where the mixture is adjusted until the meter indicates the desired setpoint. The unknown fuel gas is then fed into the meter at the same controlled air/fuel ratio. The percentage of LEL now indicated by the meter is used to calculate the heating value of the new gas.
