Six variations of a do-it-yourself solar collector design were constructed and exposed under stagnation conditions for 1 year; collectors were basically closed boxes without air circulation. Temperature in each collector was recorded throughout the test period and the effect of these temperatures on the wood framing and plywood in the collectors was estimated based on previous studies of effect of high temperature on properties of wood. Visual observations were also made on the wood, paint, insulation, and glazing. Locally-available materials are used for the most part and minimal carpentry skills are required. Some design variations and modifications are suggested. The results to date on the development of a low-cost solar air heater are described. A unique jet-impingement concept is used as the absorber plate-to-air stream heat-transfer mechanism. The program objective is to design, fabricate, test and evaluate the jet-impingement concept collector. For comparison purposes, a baseline parallel-plate collector was analyzed, fabricated and tested. Values for the average jet-heat transfer coefficient are predicted and presented. A computer simulation using a nodal network collector model is used to predict collector performance. Solar water heater plans reviewed

Plans for four solar domestic hot water heating systems available from various organizations or individuals are reviewed. One plan utilizes a 4 by 8 ft collector with serpentine piping and constructed of aluminum sheets bent over the copper tube flow pattern. A 55 gal drum located above the collector in an insulated box contains two series of copper pipes for the potable water and the antifreeze heat transfer fluid. The units cost about $300. Passive thermosiphon solar collector

A passive thermosiphon solar collector was designed, built, installed and tested under this grant. The basic premise was to design a simple system that was economical to build and easy to install as a retrofit to many similar homes in the local community. The module is comprised of a 2X4 frame with a sandwiched insert consisting of a flat black painted aluminum absorber panel and a fiberglass reinforced plastic glazing.
