A foam pattern is described for use in a lost foam casting process for making a cylinder block of a crankcase compression, two-cycle engine, the cylinder block having a transfer passage extending through the cylinder block to connect a crankcase end of a cylinder with a transfer port in a wall of the cylinder, the transfer port positioned intermediate the crankcase and head end of the cylinder, and having an exhaust port through the wall of the cylinder intermediate the ends of the cylinder.
