The Zap-Lok method of joining metal pipelines is introduced. A description of the joint is presented. The joint theory and mechanism by which joint strength is attained are explained. Joint strength relative to pipe strength is discussed, and results of voluminous test data are summarized. Joint types are presented for bare steel pipe, aluminum pipe, internal thin-film-coated pipe, and external thin-film-coated pipe. Equipment utilized in pipe and preparation and pipe joining is described, and the Zap-Lok pipeline construction philosophy is presented. Zap-Lok pipe joint application is discussed, and the history of its use and its advantages are reviewed.
