The synthetic fuel field is in trouble today. Under the combined weight of large capital costs and uncertain fuel prices, the major projects have been failing at a fast rate. While this has been happening, underground coal gasification (UCG) has been proceeding forward to an extent not generally appreciated. Its capital costs are low; its price forecasts are very attractive. Underground coal gasification is described as the leading third generation contender as a source of low cost, clean fuel and synthesis gas.
