The coal industry must expand and develop new markets, but it must first advance coal preparation technology and develop coal liquids. The author describe's United Coal Company's involvement and the state-of-the-art of the technology in terms of their role in accelerating coal use. His discussion covers improved coal washing techniques, the use of micronized coal in coal-water mixtures, and the manufacture of other fluid fuels from coal, such as coal-oil and coal-methanol mixtures.
