A new method to allow water removal and impregnation of peat and peaty sediment samples prior to microscopic study avoids deformation of the original texture. This method resolves a variety of problems that other techniques encountered in the preparation of these materials, including incomplete impregnation of sediments with organic matter or an unreasonably lengthy process. The new method is based on fixation of the organic matter with formaldehyde, and chemical dehydration with ethanol. The specimens are then impregnated with conventional epoxy or polyester waxes, and the addition of acetone for reduction of the viscosity. The method is quick and easy, and it produces reliable results.
