Title: Probing quark mass matrices with [ital CP] violation

Mass matrices are discussed in the standard model, taking into account the small observed value of [ital CP] violation, in order to disclose possible patterns. A particular mass pattern emerges in the limit of small [ital CP] violation. We obtain the following relations between the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements and the quark masses: [vert bar][ital V][sub [ital u][ital b]][vert bar][congruent][ital m][sub [ital s]][sup 2][vert bar][ital V][sub [ital u][ital s]][vert bar] /[ital m][sub [ital b]][sup 2[vert bar]][ital V][sub [ital c][ital b]][vert bar] and [vert bar][ital V][sub [ital t][ital d]][vert bar][congruent][vert bar][ital V][sub [ital u][ital s]][vert bar] /[vert bar][ital V][sub [ital c][ital b]][vert bar]([ital m][sub [ital s]][sup 2]/[ital m][sub [ital b]][sup 2]+[vert bar][ital V][sub [ital c][ital b]][vert bar][sup 2]), which imply that the measure of [ital CP] violation is approximated by [vert bar][ital J][vert bar][congruent][ital m][sub [ital s]][sup 2]/[ital m][sub [ital b]][sup 2][vert bar][ital V][sub [ital u][ital s]][vert bar][sup 2].
