Abstract

Progress is reported on two desalination projects in Saudi Arabia sponsored by a joint agreement of the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) and the US Department of the Interior (USDI). Project A, research, development, and training center (R, D and T), conducts needs analyses and trains Saudi Arabians to operate and maintain desalination plants. Project B is developing the technology for large-scale multistage flash (MSF) evaporation plants. A recent change in focus is deemphasizing project B, but the Joint Agreement continues to make progress on its goals. The appendix presents a summary of the operation and projects and lists the major design features of the R, D and T Center. 1 reference, 1 table. (DCK)

This article reports the results of vapor-size corrosion monitoring studies carried out in multistage flash (MSF) desal unit No. 100 of Al-Khafji power and Desalination Plant in Saudi Arabia. Corrosion behavior of 70/30 Cu-Ni alloy, carbon steel (CS), and type 316L stainless steel (SS) was studied in vents and in the vapor size of distillers for 2,000, 4,000, and 9,000 h. Analyses of the experimental data indicated that in addition to O{sub 2}, S-containing compounds evolved during flashing of seawater reacted more with Cu-Ni alloy than with CS and type 316L SS. SOLERAS - Solar-Powered Water Desalination Project at Yanbu: Indirect freeze desalination system performance

The desalination subsystem of the solar-powered desalination pilot project located at Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, was operated successfully for two years. Water production rates of 180 m/sup 3//day can be obtained for a period of 24 hours. In addition, once the proper procedures are followed, water production can continue for long periods of time at rates of 135 m/sup 3//day.
