EET is nearing the completion of the base phase of work under a DOE Program Research and Development Agreement (PRDA), Contract DE-AC21-96MC33138. The objective of this contract is to evaluate the effectiveness and economics of EET`s TechXtract{copyright} technology for the decontamination of equipment and debris. The contract also includes development of treatment and waste minimization options for the secondary waste streams from the decontamination process. EET began work under the PRDA contract in September, 1996. The project includes three bench scale testing phases: metal decontamination, rubble decontamination, and secondary waste treatment. Each testing phase is divided into a cold testing segment, using surrogate contaminants, and a hot testing segment, using radioactively-contaminated samples. The base phase of the project also includes initial engineering design of a full-scale system, initial activities to select a site for a field demonstration, preliminary economic analysis, and preparation of a final report. Three success criteria have been established for the project: (1) ability of the system to decontaminate materials to free release or unrestricted use levels; (2) minimization of the volume of radioactive waste; and (3) system economics which are more attractive than commercially available alternatives. This paper provides a description of the TechXtract{copyright} technology and discusses the preliminary findings and next steps of the PRDA contract.
