The Reactor Emergency Action Level Monitor (REALM) expert system is designed to provide assistance in the identification of a nuclear power plant emergency situation and the determination of its severity. REALM has been developed to operate in a real-time processing environment with interfaces to plant data acquisition computers. The system was developed by PATHFINDER under a research project sponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute and the Consolidated Edison Company of New York (Con Edison). The system's first installation was at Con Edison's Indian Point unit 2. While REALM's primary mission is to interpret live sensor data from the safety parameter display system, the depth and usefulness of its advice can be enhanced when supplemented by a limited number of nonsensored data. For REALM to be embraced as an operator aid, two requirements must be satisfied: (1) REALM must only request manual inputs that are relevant to the current situation; (2) REALM must provide an easy-to-use, intuitive interface for the manual input process. This paper describes the event table/user dialogue facility, which was added to REALM to satisfy these requirements.
