The estimated original coal resources in the Princess District of the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field are 3.36 billion short tons, and of this amount, 3.18 billion short tons constitute the remaining coal resources. The coal resources are tabulated by standard U.S. Geological Survey resource classes for the 24 coal beds that occur in the district. Lawrence County contains more than 2 billion tons, or 60 percent of the resource, followed by Boyd with 630 million tons or 19 percent, Carter with 501 million tons or 15 percent, and Greenup with 204 million tons or 6 percent. Lewis County contains no known mineable coal.
